Let’s face it! A Bangladeshi wedding to us is filled with ‘jhakanaka’. Jhanaka means excitement, thrill, craze and joy. As citizens of this country, Bangladesh, we have grown up watching Dhallywood and Bollywood movies. And frankly speaking, we all know how brides and bridegrooms dress for their weddings in those films. The marriage scenes are straight out of fairytales with a prince and princess, a Fairy Godmother, a carriage and the all-time classic Cinderella shoe. It truly seems magical that we completely get engrossed in the moment and start building castles in air. But hold your breath for a moment - Is that how weddings are in real life?


If we think practically, a marriage is not bed of roses. There are several challenges including financial, emotional, societal, and familial factors that creates a turmoil of tsunamis in the bride and bridegroom’s hearts. This is not always the case but yes, the gist here is that real life difficulties are not completely portrayed in films. But amongst all the chaos, we definitely want to look the best on our wedding day because it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. And no matter what is going inside our minds and hearts, we want to look the prettiest, handsomest, most gorgeous, most ravishing, and the most sophisticated bride or bridegroom in the history of Earth. 

So this article is about the flamboyant array of attires that you can wear at your wedding to simply look no less than a king or queen!

Ladies First!

This is for the ladies who have forever believed in epic love and romance. The following dresses will make everyone’s heart beat louder and make your spouse fall in love with you even more.

Saree


Saree, as we all know, is the traditional dress of Bangladesh. It consists of a single piece of drape of various breadths and widths which is secured at the waist using a petticoat and the remaining part is draped over the shoulder. Girls even wear a blouse under the saree that can be made in numerous designs- a few examples would be dori attached back open blouse, designed back neck full hand blouse, transparent sheer back designed blouse, and so on. Wear saree to represent your cultural pride with elegance and grace!

At home, girls usually wear cotton or fiber cellulose (taath) sarees. But brides in their weddings prefer wearing silk, synthetic fabrics, or net sarees to make them stand out from the crowd. The brides simply want to adorn themselves with the classiest and most shimmering wedding attires, as if it show that all the light of the convention centre is being radiated from them. And these attires ensure that this is what actually happens!

Lehenga


Also known as ghagra, lehenga is a type of long, embellished with pearls and sequins or embroidered, and pleated skirt. A blouse covering the upper half of the body is usually complementary attire to ghagra. To complete the look, drape the dupatta over your shoulder and sparkle the entire function with grace!

What About Men?

Women do not only have the right to sparkle and mesmerize others. Men have the desire as well to look like the ultimate royal prince who has come to charm his princess away. In order to adopt this look, the following has a list of wedding attires that men can wear for taking everyone’s breath away!

Panjabi & Pyjama


This attire can never go wrong in a traditional ceremony such as a wedding. Men all their lives wear different forms of panjabi and pyjama. What can be than the simplicity and elegance of Bangladeshi culture being brought into their own wedding.

Wear your panjabi and pyjama with a classy dupatta or decorated vest to spice up your outfit. You can wear a pair of normal shoes, or panjabi jutti, as shown in the picture, to look like the ultimate prince-charming!

Sherwani


Sherwani is an even more traditional and sophisticated look compared to panjabi and pyjama. You can pair it with a pyjama or a dhoti to bring out a stylish and classy look. 

These are some of the most basic and common wedding attires that both the bride and groom of Bangladesh wear. A few additional suggestions would be to avoid black and white colored dresses since these colors are associated with mourning. And for women, if your wedding dress is not ravishing enough, it would be perfect if you do not counter balance your look with a bold makeup. Try matching your makeup with the colors and glamor of your dress. Finally, especially for women, do not forget to adorn yourselves with tons of jewelry because this is the only day you would not get judged for wearing unnecessarily huge necklaces, bracelets, earrings and what not.
